Sports Medicine the Good Bad and the Ugly

I have developed some unresolvable foot condition which has made me stop teaching karate, and makes my love of skiing painful and most sports untolerable. My hope is that I can protect any other athletes from further injuring themselves during their favourite activity.

I have been fortunate to been given the opportunity to consult with the best in the business in Toronto. We are blessed to have such nice and genuinely concerned sports medicine doctors in the cith. From Dr. Michael Clairfield, Dr. Tony Galea, Dr. Jack Hakoun, Dr. Midroni, Dr. Lau, Dr. Lebowitz, Dr. Tim Marshall, and on, they have all given their best efforts to solve my injuries.

However, in the end, the patient must become the doctor to heal himself, as only he really knows the pain. I write this blog so that all athletes, understand that they must take responsibility for their long term health. Be careful with the sport of your choice, and protect your body from injury. Feet are partiocularly complicated, and never compromise on the quality of your foot wear. However the most important word I can share with is INFLAMATION. Inflammation, is the way the body protects an injury and sends in the soldiers to repair the damage. However, inflammation is also the cause of great pain, and one has to drain the area of inflammation in order to get the pain down.

Inflammation can be created by high blood sugars on the chemistry level. Excess weight can create elevated sugars. Keep your diet under control to keep excess fat and sugars out of your diet. In addition the area that is in pain needs to be drained of the inflammation to promote healing. Heat feels good, but ice drains the inflammation. Keep the ice on and off for 10 minutes to get the inflammation down. Keep the sugars down to keep inflammation down on the inside.

Take good care of your feet, as you only get one pair for your whole life.
