North Toronto vs High Park Ski Race Day

I have recently joined the North Toronto Ski Club, and am continuously impressed with what you get for $140.00 from a non profit, volunteer run organization. State of the art web based booking systems, instruction by certified CSIA instructors, quality bus travel, a vast selection of charter week ski trips and mid week trips to private clubs. In addition there is an annual ski race where the two majour ski clubs compete for fun against eachother. The race is set by Mt. St. Louis Moonstone the host mountain. Racing gates and a timing bar is installed and racers compete against those of similar skill levels. At the end of the day, medals are given out, dances go on and even a torch light ski demonstration to the clubs entertainment is provided courtesy of Mt. St. Louis Moonstone ski school. At the same time club members are impressing one another where their next majour ski adventure is going to be. Destinations such as Austria, Colorado and Whistler and Fernie are thrown around to tantalize the other ski enthusiasts. The volunteer DJ spins the tunes ( which in my opinion cold use some updating) but most people are just enjoying being out of the city having drinks and socializing.

As a long time ski adventurer and instructor, I get great pleasure to meet people with similar passions and interests. These clubs have been going strong for 50 years and are part of Toronto's greatest treasures. People from all skill levels have an opportunity to learn and develop their skiing to a higher level. The wide mix of backgrounds and ages of the members also makes the clubs very entertaining. Having run my own groups for a few years, I am impressed with the number of trips and buses that these clubs move per season.

I was a little disappointed not making it to the podium, but I was impressed, that there were skiers faster than I was. Then again, I am a bump skier, not a racer.

Until next time.
