Cycling Wolfe Island

We had the pleasure of exploring Wolfe Island located a short ferry ride from downtown Kingston, Ontario. The first thing one notices as you approach the island is the plethora of wind turbines on the island converting wind to electricity. This environmental consciousness combined with the continual light wind makes this island a beautiful place for cyclists.

The ferry from Kingston exits at Maryville, where all rides start. The local cycling shop has mapped out three routes for tourists to explore. One route of 58 kms, which follows the roads east and south. One route of 18 kms which takes one to a provincial beach along a scenic roadway, and a third route of 28 kms which takes one to the south of the island to the connecting ferry to the US to Cape Vincent.

In general, the island is a wonderful cyclist haven, as the roads are flat, the cars are limited, and the light breeze makes it cool and pleasant.. We cycled all three routes. However, next time I would plan to take the ferry to Cape Vincent and explore the cycling on the US side. Will need to bring a passport to get across though.

Attractions of Wolfe Island include  the Island Grill, a very cool patio bar, Wolfe Island Bakery, which has awesome breads and pastries and the very friends Wolfe Island Cycling shop. They were very kind people that allowed us to borrow a helmet, without a deposit or identification. It is good to be in rural Canada.

Definitely worth the drive to the Wolfe.

Howl On,
