Supermarket Sundays in Kensington Market - and Future Canadian Idol

It was a wet rainy Sunday evening in Toronto and it felt like spring instead of mid winter. Could not ski in the rain, so I went shopping instead. One of the oldest street markets in Toronto is Kensington Market now gentrified and alive with youthful bars, restaurants, skateboard shops with young people shopping, dining and performing. Just south of College and west of Spadina Kensington Market was the original start of the Jewish community of Toronto. Now it is an eclectic mix of new immigrants from Brazil, Portugal  and Latin America.

One redevolpment is the Supermarket, which has been reengineered  from a grocery store into a restaurant and live music venue. On Sunday nights local artists take to the stage for two songs and are supported by high quality sound men and lighting. Every type and age of artist shows up. From the quiet acoustic sounds to the heavy rocker, from 10 years old to 70. Last night a young 16 year old showed up with her coach Zach Werner, one of the judges from Canadian Idol. The audience went dead quiet as Rachel Myers belted out Billy Gene, a Michael Jackson sound in a gutteral and romantic sound.

The Supermarket is a great place to shop for new artists in a place that once sold fruits and vegetables. Toronto the good is alive on Sunday nights in the market.
