They are in our coffee shops, night clubs, and restaurants. The bring with them various size packages. Some carry violins. Some carry guitars. Some carry cellos. If they have no packages, it means they play piano. The Russians have landed in Toronto, and they bring good music, with a keen interest in American rock and roll, jazz and blues. As I learned from my Latvian friend, the younger communist controlled musicians would have to search out American music on short wave radios. The same way that blue jeans were black market items, so was American rock and roll , blues etc. They were trained classically, but were romanticized by the black influenced sounds of America. Now they are here sharing and grooving with us.
Last Saturday I went to a local coffee shop at Finch and Yonge, and there they were. Grooving to a cool jazz beat at Coffee Jazz Mixers www.coffeejazzmixers.ca. Who would have thought that at Yonge and Finch you could hear such good jazz? Alex Zlotnick www.alexanderzlotnik.com on keyboards, Alex Shain www.reverbnation.com/alexshain on lead guitar with some fellow percussion and bass guitarists.
They may be computer programmers, by day, but they are musicians by night. They bring the sounds of their musical training to our fair city, making life in Canada all the more sophisticated. For an evening to hang and listen to jazz, check out Coffee Jazz Mixers on Finch, just west of Yonge on north side of the street on Fridays and Saturday nights after 9pm.
